A legacy, carved in jade

Discover the rich history behind Contemporary Jade, a passion ignited in the 1960s and nurtured through generations. From a father's pioneering spirit to a lifelong dedication to the art of pounamu carving, our story is etched in every unique piece Lorrance creates. He is pleased to open this online shop based in Tauranga, New Zealand, specializing in unique high-quality carved jade jewelry.

A family legacy begins

Lorrance's journey into the world of lapidary began in the early 1960s when he was immersed from a young age in his father Keith Torckler's pioneering work. Keith was one of New Zealand’s original lapidarists, collecting, cutting, shaping, and polishing semi-precious gemstones at this homemade workshop in Taranaki. In 1963, he transitioned his hobby into a lifelong career, teaching lapidary night classes and opening a manufacturing jewelry shop in Auckland. It was there he honed his skills in fine gold and silver work, a foundation that would soon influence his meticulous approach to jade carving that he became renowned for being commissioned to make many intricate fine carvings and teaching the next generation of carvers. It was during the 1970's that as a teenager Lorrance was fortunate to learn the art of working greenstone alongside his father.

Green & Gold

Lorrance's formal education led him to a 5-year geology degree at Auckland University, graduating with an MSc in 1979. Throughout his studies, he continued to develop his carving skills at the Greenstone Factory in Avondale, often working weekends or into the night. While his main career spanned 45 years in geology, he always maintained a home studio, keeping his love for greenstone alive. Upon 'retirement' in early 2024, he was able to spend more time in his studio to work his creative flair with greenstone, establishing Contemporary Jade to share these carvings and pass on the craft to future generations. His father, who passed in early 2023 at 93, left not only a rich legacy of skills but a cache of stone dating back to the 1960s, which now complements his own collection spanning five decades. While Lorrance has worked with nephrite jade, greenstone or pounamu as it's locally known, from various global sources, he has a special preference for good quality New Zealand greenstone that is especially suited for the fine carvings he loves creating.

Our unique touch

What truly sets Contemporary Jade carvings apart is Lorrance's distinctive style that while featuring some traditional Māori carving elements like the koru he draws inspiration from his Christian faith, from music, the arts and the natural world around him seeking to draw out the raw beauty of each piece of greenstone he works. His pieces are designed for both everyday wear and special occasions, offering a blend of heritage and contemporary flair that appeals to wide range of people. He takes pride in a meticulous attention to detail, and a high-quality finish that often requires significantly more hours than simpler, mass-produced designs, but it’s this dedication that ensures every Contemporary Jade piece is a true work of art.
